Historicizing the We Didn't Start the Fires

Historicizing the We Didn't Start the Fires

This project historicizes and contextualizes Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” (1989) and Fall Out Boy’s updated “We Didn’t Start the Fire” (2023), examining how each song catalogs major events of its era to construct a rapid-fire cultural history. By comparing Joel’s Cold War–era litany of postwar figures and crises with Fall Out Boy’s twenty-first-century references, the project highlights shifting ideas about what counts as historically significant, how memory is condensed into popular culture, and the different generational anxieties each version reflects. Together, the songs provide a lens for analyzing changes in historical consciousness, popular pedagogy, and the role of music as a vehicle for narrating the past.
